In 2003 the Nanaimo DragonSlayers began as a new team sponsored by . During that season, all team members were employees of Save on Foods, and the dragon boating fever began. Since that first, ever so short season, we have evolved to a team of employees, friends and family that enjoy the camaraderie, excitement and competitiveness that the sport brings. We are a mixed team, members of the Nanaimo Paddling Centre based in Nanaimo, BC. We practice in the beautiful waters of the Nanaimo Harbour.
Dragon boating is an excellent form of exercise. Because of the nature and dynamics of this type of paddling, it also brings awareness to breast cancer and the research needed to end this terrible disease. The Nanaimo DragonSlayers are proud to support our local survivor teams whenever possible.
From 2003-2009, we had the pleasure of being coached by Ian Drown. Ian’s drive and passion for the sport are the reasons why he was awarded coach of the year in 2006 from PacificSport.
In 2010, Ian passed the coaching torch to fellow DragonSlayer, Charlene Hoskins. Charlene’s zeal for the sport of dragon boating was matched only by her strength as a coach. Through her efforts, the DragonSlayers have remained one of Nanaimo’s top competitive mixed dragon boat teams from 2010-2012.
In 2012, it was Charlene turn to pass the coaching torch to another fellow Dragonslayers when Doug Wansbrough became our lead coach. Doug’s dedication to our team was countless and its strength as a coach was undeniable. Through Doug’s leadership, our team remained one of Nanaimo’s top competitive mixed dragon boat teams.
In 2017, the coaching torch has once again been passed to another fellow Dragonslayers when Karen Chang became our lead coach. Karen’s determination and coaching style is keeping everyone extremely motivated to remain on the road of success. Through Karen’s leadership, our team continues being one of Nanaimo’s top competitive mixed dragon boat teams.
With hard work and determination, we have been rewarded with being the top local team at the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2014, and 2016. Also see more accomplishments over the years.
Every year brings new and exciting challenges, changes and goals for our team. The annual meeting gives us the opportunity to decide on which dragon boat festivals and events we will attend for the upcoming season, as well as any creative fundraising ideas brought forth by team members. Over the years, money has been raised to cover event entrance fees, coaching, and boat expenses. Examples of these efforts are: running the concession for the Nanaimo Raiders football team; hosting dinners and silent auctions; raffle draws; and hosting numerous car washes. We have also raised funds for breast cancer research, by participating in the CIBC Run for the Cure.
New team members and those interested in becoming a part of our team/family are welcome to attend our annual meeting and see what dragon boating is all about. Our practices are twice a week starting in March, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. We are always looking for new people with the commitment and desire to be part of a competitive sports team. Hope to see you there!
